Setting Goals That Truly Work for You!

At the start of a new season, we often feel the pull to set goals. Sometimes it’s a burst of motivation—“This is the time I’ll finally do it!” Other times it’s pressure, comparison, or even guilt.

But here’s the truth: goals aren’t about proving yourself to anyone. They’re about creating a life that feels aligned with you.

Why goals matter

Goals give us direction. They help us move from drifting through our days to living with intention. Without them, it’s easy to feel stuck in survival mode, never quite moving towards the things we long for.

The problem with traditional goal-setting

Too often, we set goals that are:

  • Unrealistic and overwhelming.

  • Based on what we think we “should” want, not what we actually desire.

  • So big and vague that we have no idea where to begin.

And when we inevitably fall short, we beat ourselves up and decide we’re not disciplined enough. The cycle repeats.

A kinder way to set goals

If you want your goals to actually stick—and feel good while you’re moving towards them—try these steps:

  1. Start with your values.
Ask yourself: What matters most to me right now? Is it health, creativity, connection, peace, growth? Let your goals grow out of those values.

  2. Break it down.
Big dreams are wonderful—but they need small steps. Instead of “get fit,” try “walk for 15 minutes three times this week.” Small wins build momentum.

  3. Focus on progress, not perfection.
Your worth isn’t measured by whether you tick every box. Notice what’s moving forward, however slowly. Progress is proof that you’re growing.

  4. Check in regularly.
Life changes, and so do your needs. Revisit your goals each month and ask: Does this still serve me? It’s okay to adjust or let something go.

Remember: goals are tools, not chains

They’re meant to support your journey—not weigh you down. A good goal feels energising, not exhausting. It pulls you forward because it connects you to the life you want to live.

✨ You don’t need a perfect plan—you just need a first step.

If you’d love support in setting goals that feel aligned, sustainable, and deeply personal to you, I’d love to help. Coaching can give you the clarity, structure, and encouragement to stay on track without burning out.
